Johnny Appleseed Week

This was a super fun week for learning about apples! The fall weather went right along with the theme too! Below is the most asked question about Johnny Appleseed from the children of AoHV.

Why did Johnny Appleseed plant apples?

Planting apple or pear trees was a way for settlers to have their land claim recognized by the government (an orchard demonstrated they intended to stay permanently). By selling seedlings to people arriving in the wilds of Ohio and Indiana, Johnny Chapman (Appleseed) made creating an orchard with at least 50 apple trees a lot easier.

The children enjoyed making apple pies, apple cinnamon playdough, apple art, and examining different types and tastes of apples. Our Pre-K 2 class conducts a Johnny Appleseed parade throughout the school every year that imitates that of a "senior walk". It was a fabulous week and we can't wait for October festivities!

Get Set For School! Handwriting Without Tears

At AoHV our preschoolers begin pre-writing skills as early as a year old. Every day we incorporate and encourage open center time that includes art of various types for free writing and art learning. Once developmentally ready a child is instructed on correct pencil grip, and introduction to intentional wrist movements. Here are some facts about the Get Set For School Program:
