Johnny Appleseed Week

This was a super fun week for learning about apples! The fall weather went right along with the theme too! Below is the most asked question about Johnny Appleseed from the children of AoHV.

Why did Johnny Appleseed plant apples?

Planting apple or pear trees was a way for settlers to have their land claim recognized by the government (an orchard demonstrated they intended to stay permanently). By selling seedlings to people arriving in the wilds of Ohio and Indiana, Johnny Chapman (Appleseed) made creating an orchard with at least 50 apple trees a lot easier.

The children enjoyed making apple pies, apple cinnamon playdough, apple art, and examining different types and tastes of apples. Our Pre-K 2 class conducts a Johnny Appleseed parade throughout the school every year that imitates that of a "senior walk". It was a fabulous week and we can't wait for October festivities!
