Tornado Safety!

In an average year, 1000 tornadoes are reported, resulting in 80 deaths and over 1,500 injuries. Tornadoes have been reported in every state and can happen at any time of the year. Take tornadoes seriously, because with winds blowing at 200 mph or more, they can destroy just about anything in its path. Always listen to the radio and television for the latest information and instructions for your area.

A TORNADO WATCH means tornadoes are possible in your area. Stay tuned to the radio or television news.

A TORNADO WARNING means a tornado is either on the ground or has been detected by Doppler radar. Seek shelter immediately!

BEFORE A TORNADO:

• Have a disaster plan. Make sure everyone knows where to go in case a tornado threatens.
• Make sure you know which county or parish you live in.
• Prepare a disaster supplies kit for your home and car. Include a first aid kit, canned food and a can opener, bottled water, battery-operated radio, flashlight, protective clothing and written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas, and water.

DURING A TORNADO:

• Go to a basement.
• If you do not have a basement, go to an interior room without windows on the lowest floor such as a bathroom or closet.
• If you can, get under a sturdy piece of furniture, like a table.
• If you live in a mobile home get out. They offer little protection against tornadoes.
• Get out of automobiles. Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car, leave it immediately.
• If you’re outside, go to a ditch or low lying area and lie flat in it.
• Stay away from fallen power lines and stay out of damaged areas.

IF YOU’RE AT SCHOOL DURING A TORNADO:

• Every school should have a disaster plan and have frequent drills.
• Basements offer the best protection.
• Schools without basements should use interior rooms and hallways on the lowest floor away from windows.
• Crouch down on your knees and protect your head with your arms.
• 
  

AFTER A TORNADO:

• Stay indoors until it is safe to come out.
• Check for injured or trapped people, without putting yourself in danger.
• Watch out for downed power lines.
• Use a flashlight to inspect your home.

Happy St.Patrick's Day!

🍀🍀  Today in Preschool 3, the class was  busy learning all about St. Patrick's Day and a little friend called a Leprechaun. We decided that we were going to try and catch a leprechaun! We gathered lots of green items that we found around the school and even made a traps out of recycled boxes! We were all sure to take a nap, cause rumor has it that leprechauns only come around if you're not there or if you're sleeping,  when we woke up there were green footprints everywhere! We followed them to our bathroom where the leprechaun had gone potty and it was GREEN!!! We then remembered our trap, so we ran over to see if we had caught him and unfortunately he got away, but he was sure to leave us a tasty treat for all of our hard work!

The Teachers of AoHV Are STARS!

We have such supportive families that always do so much for our teachers! We went through our STARS assessment with sweat and tears (from the teachers who weren't picked). We work so hard all year for this special day when we get to show off our wonderful talents. Our parents put together a special lunch for us all to enjoy after a long day of hard work. Happy Birthday Dr. Suess!

We have been reading Doctor Suess books all week at AoHV and we have enjoyed seeing the children all dressed up in their favorite characters. Reading is so important for their cognitive, emotional, and language development. We will be having our scholastic book fair next week and we hope you can attend and pick out some of your favorites. We love making memories and experiencing the joy and creativity that books bring to us. Stay calm and read on!

A Visit From the Dentist!

What should I use to clean my baby's teeth?

A toothbrush will remove plaque bacteria that can lead to decay. Any soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head, preferably one designed specifically for infants, should be used at least once a day at bedtime. 

When should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up?

In order to prevent dental problems, your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday.

What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist?

Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. A pediatric dentist has two to three years specialty training following dental school and limits his/her practice to treating children only. Pediatric dentists are primary and specialty oral care providers for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs. 

What should I do if my child falls and knocks out a permanent tooth?

The most important thing to do is to remain calm. Then find the tooth. Hold it by the crown rather than the root and try to reinsert it in the socket. If that is not possible, put the tooth in a glass of milk and take your child and the glass immediately to the pediatric dentist. 

How can parents help prevent tooth decay?

Parents should take their children to the dentist regularly, beginning with the eruption of the first tooth. Then, the dentist can recommend a specific program of brushing, flossing, and other treatments for parents to supervise and teach to their children. These home treatments, when added to regular dental visits and a balanced diet, will help give your child a lifetime of healthy habits.

Nature Hunt at it's Finest!

Finding ways to engage children and allow them opportunities to enjoy the outdoors is a win-win for everyone involved and fun way to enjoy any season. When it is rainy we still go outside because it a great way to use all of our senses. Preschool 2 went on an amazing nature hunt today and found a frog, snake, turtle, bird house, red berries on a bush, pine cones, and we even got to feel the moss on the ground.
